⇒ARGUE, subst. fém.
TECHNOL. Machine à cabestan maintenant la filière où sont dégrossis les blocs d'or, d'argent, de cuivre ou de laiton; p. ext. la filière elle-même ou l'atelier où elle fonctionne.
♦ Bureaux de l'argue. Lieu ,,où les orfèvres et les tireurs d'or font dégrossir leurs lingots. Ces bureaux ont été établis dans l'origine pour conserver au fisc les droits de marque`` (BOUILLET 1859).
DÉR. Arguer2, verbe trans. Passer par les filières de l'argue les lingots d'or, d'argent ou de cuivre pour les dégrossir. ,,Il est défendu aux orfèvres d'arguer chez eux leurs métaux.`` (BOUILLET 1859, s.v. argue). Outre l'emploi trans., BESCH. 1845 lui reconnaît un emploi pronom. passif ,,être passé à l'argue``.

ÉTYMOL. ET HIST. — 1. Av. 1667 mar. « cabestan » (J. DE THEVENOT, Suite du Voyage de Levant, Paris 1674, p. 357 ds ARVEILLER, Fr. mod., t. 25, p. 305 : les bâtons de l'argue), attesté seulement au XVIIe s.; 2. 1680 mét. (RICH. : Argue. Lieu à Paris où l'on tire, & où l'on dégrosse l'or & l'argent pour les orfévres et les tireurs d'or. C'est aussi une machine composée d'un gros pivot & de barres de bois, autour de laquelle il y a une corde qu'on étend & qu'on atache avec des tenailles courtes & grosses à une autre machine qu'on appelle la tête de l'argue, où l'on met une filiere au travers de laquelle on tire les bouts d'or & d'argent pour les dégrosser).
Prob. empr. à l'ital. argano « treuil », attesté dep. le XVe s. (Pulci, 24-76 ds BATT.) et passé aussi au prov. argue « cabestan » (cf. PELLAS, Dict. prov. et fr., Avignon 1723 d'apr. FEW t. 7 s.v. organum), du lat. tard. arganum pour organum « instrument » (empr. au gr. ) altération phonét. due à l'influence du plur. gr. prononcé et compris . Voir Vidos, p. 214.
